Facts & Distinctions
For nearly 90 years, Long Island University (LIU) has been dedicated to redefining higher education and empowering our students with the skills they needed to excel in the classroom and throughout their professional careers.
One of the nation’s largest comprehensive private universities, LIU offers more than 500 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degree programs and certificates, and educates more than 20,000 students.
LIU’s experiential learning programs, its high-tech startup incubator, student-run businesses, and the LIU Promise student-mentoring program distinguish LIU as a leader in academic innovation. But the true testament to our success is in the active network of more than 200,000 alumni who are leaders in industries across the globe.
The institution provides enrichment for students and the community through world-class arts programming at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts, and the nationally renowned George Polk Awards in journalism.
In addition to university-wide accreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, our schools, colleges, and individual degree programs are recognized by many specialized accreditation boards, including the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, the American Psychological Association Commission on Accreditation, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International.
More than 500 full-time professors teach at LIU, with a significant majority holding the highest degree in their respective fields. The faculty includes Fulbright Scholars (five in 2014 alone), Academy Award winners, published authors, prominent journalists, leading scientists whose research has contributed to significant medical advances, and many more experienced and accomplished professionals.
