LIU has a proud history of helping men and women in their quest to achieve the American dream and the Office of the President is unswerving in its commitment to promoting the University’s mission.  The Office is the hub of the institution and the president, who serves at the pleasure of the Board that appoints him or her, is the institution’s chief executive, financial, development and academic officer.  He or she is ultimately responsible for every aspect of university life and is charged with enhancing the academic mission, sustaining quality control, and overseeing the operations of the institution as an ongoing legal and business corporation.  The president must be responsible for both the modern corporate structure as well as the ancient guild of scholars, a legacy that is defined by the word “college.”  In addition to budgets, audits, fundraising and new construction, the president is the final arbiter in the award of tenure, the chief planning officer for new academic programs, and the defender of the academic values which suffuse any university.
