Announcement from Gale Stevens Haynes, Provost, LIU Brooklyn

TO:  The Brooklyn Campus Community
FROM:  Gale Stevens Haynes, Provost
DATE:  November 28, 2012
SUBJECT:  Commencement 2013

I am delighted to announce that this year’s commencement will be unlike any other in LIU history.

For the first time ever, there will be a University-wide commencement ceremony, bringing together graduates from all of our campuses for an event that will truly reflect the magnitude of their achievements and the scope of the network and resources that will continue to be available to them as LIU alumni. And this landmark event will take place in an exciting new venue: the Barclays Center.

This brand-new arena, which is home to the Brooklyn Nets, opened in September 2012 with performances by Jay-Z and Barbara Streisand, soon to be followed by Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Coldplay, the Who and Rihanna. With a seating capacity of 19,000, the state-of-the art facility is located a few blocks from campus, just steps away from Atlantic Terminal. Our men's basketball team already has played there and now the Class of 2013 will have the chance to step into the Barclays spotlight.

The joint commencement will be the culmination of weeklong campus-based celebrations across the University. Each of our schools and colleges will host recognition ceremonies on campus on May 15, which also will be the date for our traditional commencement barbecue. All LIU students and faculty are then cordially invited to the University-wide commencement at Barclays Center on May 16, which will include the conferral of degrees; a keynote address by a prominent honorary degree recipient; and an address by University President David Steinberg. LIU Pharmacy will hold its hooding ceremony on May 17.

Commencement 2013 will acknowledge that, as members of the LIU community, we are all part of something bigger. I look forward to celebrating our strength in unity as we salute our graduates and make history in the process.
