Announcement from Paul Forestell, Provost, LIU Post
TO: LIU Post Community
FROM: Paul Forestell, Provost
DATE: November 28, 2012
SUBJECT: LIU Commencement
It is my pleasure to announce that the LIU Post Class of 2013 will be part of an historic event for Long Island University. For the first time, LIU Post will join together with our sister campuses – LIU Brooklyn, LIU Brentwood, LIU Hudson and LIU Riverhead – to celebrate the achievements of all LIU graduates in a single University-wide commencement ceremony. This landmark event will take place in an exciting venue: the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., which has a unique partnership with Long Island University.
This brand-new arena, home to the Brooklyn Nets, opened in September 2012 with performances by Jay-Z and Barbara Streisand, soon to be followed by Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Coldplay, the Who and Rihanna. With a seating capacity of 19,000, the state-of-the art facility is just steps away from the Long Island Rail Road’s Atlantic Terminal with parking conveniently located nearby. Significantly, LIU will be the first educational institution to hold its commencement at this prominent new venue.
The all-university commencement will be the culmination of weeklong campus-based celebrations across the University. The five schools and colleges of LIU Post will hold individual recognition and awards ceremonies on Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11 at the LIU Post campus in Brookville. At these ceremonies, each graduate will be recognized by name. All LIU students and faculty are then cordially invited to the University-wide commencement at Barclays Center on Thursday, May 16, which will include the conferral of degrees; a keynote address by a prominent honorary degree recipient; an address by University President David Steinberg; a speech from a student honor speaker; performances by LIU Post’s symphonic band and chorus; and presentations to distinguished alumni from each campus.
Commencement 2013 at Barclays Center will be a celebration of unprecedented size and scope, paying tribute to our newest graduates as they become part of the LIU network of more than 186,000 alumni. I urge each of you to join us as we come together as one university on this special day.
