Long Island University Appoints Gail D. Weiner Assistant Vice President for Employee Relations

Accomplished Human Resources Professional to Join Long Island University’s HR Team

Gail D. Weiner Brookville, N.Y.-- Long Island University has named Gail D. Weiner assistant vice president for employee relations. In this capacity, she will oversee employee relations for a diverse academic community with a workforce of nearly 4000 employees. Her responsibilities will include providing employee and supervisor training; administering conflict resolution processes; creating and interpreting employment policy; managing the employee assistance program; and assisting with collective bargaining issues. Ms. Weiner succeeds Howard White, who led the University’s employee relations operation for 20 years before retiring in May 2010.

Ms. Weiner, who will work closely with the human resources officers at the campus level, brings a comprehensive background in higher education to her new position. Most recently, she worked at Columbia University, where she served as special project administrator at Columbia University Medical Center and as director of employee relations. In the latter role, Ms. Weiner built an employee relations program for the institution, introducing conflict resolution and performance management programs that increased compliance with policies and procedures, and reduced the number of employee grievances.

Prior to joining the administration at Columbia, she held positions of increasing responsibility at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). Ms. Weiner began her tenure there as assistant counsel and human resources generalist, and went on to serve as manager of compensation and assistant counsel for labor relations, acting director of human resources, and assistant counsel and manager of labor relations before ultimately becoming assistant general counsel for employment and labor. While at NJIT, she spearheaded the use of databases to track and manage labor relations data.

In her work with both institutions, Ms. Weiner has coached and counseled supervisors and employees, and effectively has utilized competitive compensation structures and identified best practices to achieve staffing and budgetary goals. She also has conducted investigations and provided resolution regarding sexual harassment, discrimination and gross misconduct allegation matters.

Ms. Weiner, who was admitted to the New Jersey Bar in 1999, holds a J.D. from New York Law School and a B.A. in English and American studies from Brandeis University. She currently resides in Hoboken, N.J., and will be relocating to New York City this summer.
