University Appoints New Senior Director of Employee Benefits

After a nationwide search, Long Island University has named John Doran senior director of employee benefits. In this capacity, he will oversee the day-to-day management of the University’s Benefits Office; lead the review, development and communication of employee benefits, including health and welfare, retirement and tuition assistance; oversee compliance; and develop policies, procedures and systems to enhance the delivery of benefits.
“John is a highly accomplished employee benefits specialist. He understands the importance of employee benefits in mission-driven organizations and will be an outstanding addition to the University's human resources team,” said Daniel Rodas, who serves as the University’s chief human resources officer.
Mr. Doran brings more than 30 years of experience in benefits administration to his new position. Most recently, he served as director of employee benefits and HRIS at the American Chemical Society in Washington, D.C., a multisite, 2,000-employee entity. In this role, Mr. Doran was responsible for benefits design, planning, pricing, financial oversight, regulatory compliance and communications, and led the development and roll out of Web-based employee self-service applications and other automated functions to optimize the administration of health and welfare, 403 (b) and pension plans.
Prior to joining the American Chemical Society, he served as senior director of benefits at Mount Sinai NYU Health, where he oversaw all benefits design and delivery for a health care system with more than 20,000 employees. During his tenure there, Mr. Doran played a leadership role in the successful merger of NYU Hospitals and Mount Sinai Hospitals facilities, streamlining benefits operations, enhancing customer service and implementing consolidated benefit design across eight health care facilities.
His other professional experiences include serving as associate vice president for benefits, compensation and HRIS at Olsten Corp.; director of employee benefit outsourcing engagements at Price Waterhouse Coopers; manager of benefits planning/administration at GPU Energy Corp.; manager of benefits administration at Grumman; and benefits administrator at Metropolitan Life.
Throughout his career, Mr. Doran has worked closely with senior management, employees and vendors to evaluate the needs of organizations and to deliver quality products and services while containing costs. He also has shared his expertise with the workforce through workshops and presentations designed to educate employees about important benefits-related issues like retirement planning.
Mr. Doran, who holds a B.A. in social sciences/education from St. John’s University, is a past member of the national client advisory boards of TIAA-CREF and the Prudential Retirement Plan 403 (b). He resides in Forest Hills, N.Y.
