Renowned architect Mark Simon will speak at the Outside the Box lecture series on Feb. 27, 2014, at the Hillwood Lecture Hall during common hour, 12:30 to 2 p.m. His lecture, "The Ten (or so) Commandments of Our Business," is based on the rules of thumb discovered across a 40-year career in architecture.
Simon is founding partner of Centerbrook, an American Institute of Architecture Firm Award winner in 1982, and is one of its four partners today. After graduating from Yale University in 1972, Simon initially built cabinets and houses, and later gained experience at several architecture offices. He is a pioneer in the practice of “green” architecture, beginning with his design of an “Earth House” in 1973 that still takes advantage of clean heating and cooling energy from the ground.
His work includes everything from private houses and highly crafted furniture, to commercial, institutional, academic, and religious projects. Simon continues to develop sustainably groundbreaking classroom and science buildings for independent schools. In addition, he has designed many landmark buildings, including Nauticus—The National Maritime Center in Virginia, the Yale Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center, and Park Synagogue East in Ohio, among others.
“Mark is a fascinating blend of sculptor, architect, and businessman who will provide a unique perspective on what his experiences have taught him about business and life,” said Dr. Andrew Rosman, dean of the LIU Post College of Management. “His warm and personal style will engage, and his perspective will equally inform those who are well-seasoned in business and those who have yet to venture out on their own.”
The Outside the Box lectures will be held at both LIU Post and LIU Brooklyn, as well as streamed live across the university, and are free and open to the LIU community. Future speakers include Irwin Tantleff, founder of Foodtown; social media guru Hilary Topper; Eric Ho of Captal One Labs; and Jeff Leventhal of Workmarket.
