Establishing Scholarships

Throughout its history, LIU has dedicated itself to providing students from all walks of life with an excellent, highly personalized education. Today, many of our students are still the first in their families to earn a college degree. To support these students, who often have substantial financial needs, we rely upon the support of individuals like you.

As funding for federal and state financial aid has decreased and need has increased, more and more universities have asked their constituents to help students by establishing a scholarship. You can help LIU meet the challenge by funding an endowed scholarship or an annual scholarship.

Endowed Scholarship

An endowed scholarship provides a permanent and personal way for you to make a difference in the life of an LIU student. Most of our students require financial assistance to achieve their dreams of a college education. You can help turn their dreams into reality, now and in the future, by establishing an endowed scholarship fund.

The Benefits of an Endowed Scholarship

LIU's students are motivated to improve their lives, however, many of them face obstacles in doing so. They hold jobs, raise children and care for family members — all while attending school.

Scholarships are a lifeline for our students, conveying a message that transcends the financial benefit they provide. To many students, the fact that someone is willing to help support their educational goals is a validation of their self-worth and a source of encouragement. Our students prove, time and again, that they deserve the faith and the support provided by scholarship donors.

LIU provides nearly $72 million annually in institutionally funded financial aid. In addition, generous donors have established over 150 endowed scholarship funds.

The availability of scholarship support is often a determining factor in where a student will attend college. To attract the most competitive students, LIU must continually expand its capacity to provide scholarships and other financial aid.

How You Can Establish an Endowed Scholarship

You can permanently designate and name an endowed scholarship at any campus and in any academic program offered by the University.

The minimum contribution to establish an endowed scholarship is $30,000. You may use cash, stocks, bonds or real property to make your gift. Paid in full, your contribution underwrites the scholarship immediately. Or, you may make a multi-year pledge and take up to five years to fulfill your contribution. Scholarships will be awarded when the pledge payments are completed. You may make additional gifts to your scholarship fund at any time. All gifts are 100% tax-deductible.

The scholarship may be specified for any discipline offered by the University and for any of the University's campuses: LIU Brooklyn, LIU Pharmacy, LIU Post, LIU Riverhead, LIU Hudson, LIU Brentwood, and LIU Global.
