Brentwood, N.Y. – When she arrived on Long Island from Venezuela three years ago, Michele Lopez spoke no English at all. On Friday, she will represent the graduate students of LIU Brentwood at the joint Commencement ceremony with LIU Riverhead and LIU Post at the LIU Post campus in Brookville, Nassau County.
Lopez is graduating with a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and has been accepted in a doctoral program at Syracuse University. She aspires to be a college professor and teach the next generation of mental health counselors about the developmental disabilities field.
She first learned English in an intensive English as a Second Language program at Suffolk County Community College, then enrolled at LIU Brentwood to pursue her longstanding interest in caring for the developmentally disabled. “My degree at Brentwood was an excellent opportunity for me to start my career,” Lopez said. “LIU Brentwood was a door-opener for me, because I was able to learn the language, reconnect myself with the field of psychology and mental health, and moved forward with my doctorate.”
The LIU Brentwood Class of 2013 includes 149 master’s degree candidates, 12 bachelor’s degree candidates and two students who have completed graduate-level advanced certificates.
Known for its small classes and quality educational opportunities, LIU Brentwood has been offering undergraduate and graduate programs to residents of Suffolk County since 1959.
The campus schedules its classes on late afternoons, evenings and weekends so that working professionals may study while meeting the demands of career and family life. Students are enrolled in graduate programs in childhood and adolescence education, criminal justice, library and information science, literacy education, mental health counseling, school library media, school counseling and special education. LIU Brentwood also offers the upper-division bachelor’s degree in criminal justice to graduates of community college programs and the LIU Post bachelor’s degree in nursing to registered nurses.
“Through quality degree programs, we prepare students with the skills and knowledge to contribute to the economic vitality of the region,” said Dr. Paul Forestell, provost of LIU Brentwood, LIU Riverhead and LIU Post. “That is why we are Long Island’s university.”
LIU Brentwood is located on the grounds of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Brentwood, conveniently located just minutes from the Brentwood train station, the Long Island Expressway and the Sagtikos Parkway.
