Brookville, N.Y. -- A new advanced certificate in Clinical Mental Health Counseling offered by the Department of Counseling and Development at LIU Brentwood will prepare professionals who have a master's degree in school counseling or other related counseling degree, to pursue state licensure as a mental health counselor.
The 15-credit program is designed to provide a bridge to New York State licensure for individuals with graduate degrees in counseling who need the additional academic credits and clinical experience to become licensed mental health counselors.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for counselors who wish to practice in the mental health field," said James Colangelo, P.D., Psy.D, associate professor of education and the executive coordinator of counseling programs. "The advanced certificate program offers busy professionals a convenient way to broaden their expertise while increasing their credentials."

Courses offer research-based knowledge as well as clinical experience in providing mental health assessment and treatment as well as an understanding of various professional, legal and ethical issues.

The program requires two, 300-hour clinical internships. Upon completion, graduates will meet the educational requirements for licensure as a mental health counselor in New York State and be able to file for a limited permit to work in the field, which will allow them to start fulfilling the 3,000-hour New York State post-master's experience requirement. Graduates will also be eligible to file to take the National Clinical Mental Health Counselor Examination, the licensure exam designated by New York State.

The Department of Counseling and Development at LIU Post educates and prepares graduate students to enter the professions of mental health counseling and school counseling through programs of study that are nationally accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Programs include master's degrees in school counseling and mental health counseling and a variety of mental health licensing preparation courses.
