New Master of Science and Advanced Certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy being offered

Admissions Events LIU Brooklyn is proud to introduce its new Master of Science and Advanced Certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy. Marriage and family therapists provide individual, couple, family, relational and group therapy. They assess, treat and implement change in the overall, long-term well-being of individuals, couples, families and those in other relationships. The 60-credit M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy Program is designed to enhance students’ knowledge in professional issues and ethics, counseling theories, human development, counseling skills, group work and assessment. Building upon these core content areas, upper-level courses focus on developing the skills and knowledge base necessary to work with individuals, couples and families in a variety of settings.

The 39-credit Advanced Certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy Program is designed for students who already have a master’s degree in counseling or a related field from a regionally accredited college or university and wish to become licensed as a marriage and family therapist.

Educational Requirements

  • Completion of all credit-bearing courses
  • 600 internship hours in marriage and family therapy
  • 100 practicum and fieldwork hours in prior coursework

Licensure Requirements

  • 1,500 hours of supervised experience in the practice of marriage and family therapy
  • Passing grade on the Examination in Marital and Family Therapy developed by the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB)

Upon completion of both programs, graduates will satisfy the educational requirements for New York State licensure in marriage and family therapy.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (master's degree required for Advanced Certificate Program)
  • Completed LIU Brooklyn Graduate application
  • Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions
  • Personal statement
  • Two letters of recommendation
