Brooklyn, N.Y. — Recognizing Long Island University’s impeccable security record, The Daily Beast has ranked the Brooklyn Campus the third safest campus in the nation. The popular news and opinion Web site this week released its list, which shows the Brooklyn Campus as the safest in New York City.
The Daily Beast’s second-annual ranking of the safest and most dangerous colleges in the U.S. can be found at: http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-09-14/50-safest-colleges/full.
“Our safety record puts our students — and particularly their parents — at ease during their time on campus,” Brooklyn Campus Provost Gale Stevens Haynes said. “The special attention we give to security allows our students, faculty, and the entire LIU community to focus on the task at hand – delivering and receiving a quality education.”
Researchers at The Daily Beast used the three most recent calendar years of campus security and crime data available (2006-2008) to produce the rankings. The data was compiled and provided by the U.S. Department of Education, as well as the FBI and the Secret Service. The Clery Act mandates that all schools that receive federal funding disclose crime information annually.
Incidents reported to campus or local police — not criminal convictions — are reflected in the data. Crime information was analyzed from 458 colleges. Nine types of criminal incidents were accounted for in safest and most dangerous schools lists. Burglary carried the lowest value, with car theft weighed twice as much, assault or robbery six times, arson 10 times, negligent manslaughter 20 times and murder 40 times.
The Brooklyn Campus had six reported burglaries during the three-year time period researched by The Daily Beast, and none of the other, more serious crimes.
The C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University also placed high on The Daily Beast’s safest colleges ranking. The Brookville, L.I., campus was tapped as the 15th safest college or university in the U.S.
