Star of New Syfy Series, Malik Yoba, to lead “The Working Actor” at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus this Fall
Intensive course not just for actors and will boost public speaking skills

Brooklyn, N.Y. — Malik Yoba, star of the new series “ALPHAS” on the Syfy Channel, will lead “The Working Actor,” an intensive course consisting of workshops and lectures at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus, beginning September 20.
A fixture on the pop culture radar, Yoba began his career on the Fox series “New York Undercover” in the 1990s and is well known for his roles in the popular film “Cool Runnings” and in Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married?” and “Why Did I Get Married Too?” In addition to his acting credits, Yoba is a producer, director and entrepreneur. Born and raised in the Bronx, he resides in Brooklyn, New York.
“I want to give an in-depth look into the business side of acting,” said the veteran actor. “I will also provide performance-based exercises and techniques that will be beneficial to anyone interested in effectively communicating to individuals and large crowds—whether it be the boardroom, the classroom, on the pulpit or on the stage.”
Part of the Fall 2011 Continuing Studies Department offerings, “The Working Actor” will run September 20, 22, 27 and 29 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Spike Lee Screening Room on the Brooklyn Campus, which is located at 1 University Plaza, corner of Dekalb and Flatbush Avenues in Downtown Brooklyn. Workshop topics include: “The Life of a Professional Actor,” “Scene Study and Improvisation,” “Audition Techniques and Cold Reads,” and “Public Speaking for the Actor.” Yoba’s “ALPHAS” co-star David Strathairn has just been added as a guest speaker, other guests will be announced. Malik Yoba, three-time NAACP Image Award winner, creator, writer, director and producer of BET.com's “ShopTalk: What’s On The Hearts Of Men,” is a film, stage and television veteran of almost 20 years. He is best known for his roles in Tyler Perry's “Why Did I Get Married?” and “Why Did I Get Married Too?,” Paramount's “Girlfriends,” Fox Television’s “New York Undercover” and the Disney Classic “Cool Runnings.” He has appeared in more than 25 films, starred in 10 television series and numerous stage plays.
In 2003, Yoba established The Malik Yoba National Theatre Company, which creates, acquires, produces and distributes content for the urban theatre market. His stage musicals include “What’s on The Hearts of Men” and “Acoustic Chocolate.”
