Brooklyn, N.Y. – Professional basketball arrives in Brooklyn about a year earlier than expected this Friday, Sept. 30, with Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus set to host a basketball game featuring teams made up of NBA players.
New York natives Joakim Noah of the Chicago Bulls and Kemba Walker of the Charlotte Bobcats will lead an Entertainers Basketball Classic (EBC) squad in a 7 p.m. tip-off against a Washington, D.C.-based team that features two-time NBA scoring champ Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The hard court classic will showcase the Brooklyn Campus’s Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center. Better known as the WRAC, the five-year-old state-of-the-art facility features a 2,500-seat arena and is home to the defending Northeast Conference men’s basketball champs, the LIU Blackbirds.
Tickets for the 7 p.m. game on Friday, Sept. 30, will be sold at the WRAC’s ticket booth, located on Ashland Place between DeKalb and Myrtle avenues, starting on Tuesday, Sept. 27, from noon to 8 p.m. Tickets will remain on sale during those same hours on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday or until they are sold out.
Professional basketball had not been scheduled to land in Brooklyn until the NBA’s Nets officially moved to the borough in 2012 to play at the Barclays Center, which is under construction. Long Island University and Barclays officials are discussing the possibility of having the Blackbirds play some games at the new arena.
EBC chief executive officer and founder Greg Marius said the EBC roster will also include another New York native, Metta World Peace (formerly Ron Artest) of the Los Angeles Lakers, as well as Corey Brewer, a member of the 2011 NBA champions Dallas Mavericks.
Durant, a perennial NBA all-star, will team up with Minnesota Timberwolves forward Michael Beasley, Sacramento Kings forward Donte Greene and Washington Wizards guard Josh Howard.
Marius added that the team is looking to recruit Los Angeles Lakers great Kobe Bryant to play for EBC in Friday’s game at Long Island University. Further information on the event is available at http://ebcsports.com.
