Dedication of the Steinberg Wellness Center at LIU Brooklyn

Brooklyn, N.Y. – To honor David J. Steinberg’s impressive 27-year legacy as president of Long Island University, LIU Brooklyn’s Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center (WRAC) will be renamed the Steinberg Wellness Center during a dedication ceremony Wednesday, April 24, at 3 p.m. inside the WRAC.
Edward Travaglianti, chairman of LIU’s board of trustees, describes the retiring Dr. Steinberg as an academic visionary, whose leadership has been nothing short of transformational. Chairman Travaglianti said. “His core decency, integrity and tireless efforts to positively change the trajectory of our students’ lives continue to be an inspiration.”
The ninth president of LIU, Dr. Steinberg was appointed April 1, 1985. During his tenure as chief executive, LIU has grown into one of the largest and most comprehensive private universities in the United States. Under his leadership, the University’s endowment has increased from $4.8 million to nearly $80 million and its enrollment has risen from 19,000 to over 24,000.
Author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Dr. Steinberg has taught, lectured and written about this important area of the world for a third of a century.
A past chair of the board of trustees for the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities, he serves on the board of directors of One to World, a not-for-profit organization designated by the U.S. Department of State.
