Brooklyn, N.Y. – Following an intensive nationwide search, an LIU search committee has selected international education expert Dr. Jeffrey Belnap as dean of LIU Global and university dean of International Education.
Dr. Belnap, who officially begins his post June 15, will in the interim serve as consultant for the college, working to articulate a dynamic vision for LIU Global and on internationalization efforts at both LIU Brooklyn and LIU Post.
"LIU Global's unique mission and its global footprint make it one of the most exceptional educational organizations in the world," said Dr. Belnap. "While it boasts a long tradition of excellence, LIU Global's educational enterprise and ethos meet absolutely contemporary needs. I hope to support the strong momentum already underway toward increasing international opportunities for students and faculty."
Currently, Dr. Belnap is chief academic officer at Zayed University, a Middle States-accredited university in the United Arab Emirates with campuses in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. During his 11 years there, he has worked with faculty from over 40 countries to build a new, rapidly expanding national institution aligned with both national needs and international best practices. He is deeply involved in redesigning the core curriculum, facilitating first-time accreditation processes, managing the rapid expansion of higher education and integrating mobile technology into the university's curriculum.
Before joining Zayed University, Dr. Belnap was the dean of arts and sciences at Brigham Young University-Hawaii Campus, an internationally oriented liberal arts university serving the Asia-Pacific region. He has extensive experience in foreign studies programs, both at Zayed and Brigham Young universities.
Dr. Belnap holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and Critical Theory from the University of California-Irvine, where he wrote one of the early dissertations on post-colonial cultural theory, bringing together case studies from Latin America, Africa and South Asia. He earned a master's degree in Comparative Literature and a bachelor's in International Relations from Brigham Young University. His teaching and research interests have concentrated on the relationship among the visual, literary and performing arts in the construction of cultural identity in the post-imperial nation state.
"With energy, motivation and a dedication to preparing students for an increasingly interdependent and connected world, Dr. Belnap's personal commitment aligns with LIU Global's curricular model and our internationalization efforts," said LIU Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Jeffrey Kane. "We look to his enthusiasm, strategic focus and extensive professional background to lead the college and build upon its unique character."
