Description

Dr. Mary Jo Dropkin has worked exclusively with the head and neck cancer patient population for over 20 years at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.  During that time, as a staff nurse and later, the Clinical Nurse Specialist for the Head and Neck Service, she provided a great deal of hands-on care for dying patients. Since obtaining her doctoral degree and moving to an academic setting, she has continued her dedication to the head and neck cancer patient population. She is certified as an End of Life Nursing Education Consortium trainer, teaches End of Life Care in the undergraduate program at LIU Brooklyn and was instrumental in making this course part of the required curriculum for undergraduate nursing students. She also teaches Nursing Research.

Over the course of her career, she has also published widely including journal articles, book chapters, and recently, she co-edited the monograph entitled “Head and Neck Cancer. She has also conducted several major research studies, building a specific research program over three decades, with the goal of determining how patients cope with the disfigurement and functional impairments sustained by this patient population in relation to treatment for the disease.  She is currently funded by the National Institute of General Medical Services for a grant entitled “Oral Cavity/Pharynx Cancer Recovery in African-Americans”.
