Audition Requirements

Students interested in pursuing Music as a major at LIU Brooklyn must meet the academic requirements set by the Office of Admissions and are required to audition for the music program faculty. 

Auditions are held at the Brooklyn campus in the fall and spring. For those students who live outside the New York City a CD recording of the required repertoire may be submitted.

Official transcripts from all high schools and colleges attended must be sent to the Office of Admissions. Please do this immediately after submitting your application and send to: Office Of Admission Undergraduate Admissions 1 University Plaza Brooklyn NY, 11201


  • Three memorized songs of contrasting style/tempo For example: classical, standards, jazz, or selections from The American Popular Songbook
  • For placement purposes, a theory and sight reading quiz will be given.

Please bring the following to your audition:

  • Sheet music of each of the pieces you will be playing or singing, in the key in which you will be performing them (so that a pianist may accompany you);
  • CD accompaniment
  • All equipment necessary for you to perform, including: 1) Quarter inch cable (for electric instruments needing to be amplified) 2. Mouthpieces and reeds (for brass and woodwind instruments) 3. Strings and picks (for guitars and stringed instruments) 4. Drum sticks and brushes (for drummers and percussionists)


You will receive a letter from the Music Program regarding the results of your audition within four weeks of your audition date.

Please note that official acceptance to the University is determined by the Office of Admissions and is based on your academic record and the recommendation of the music faculty. You will receive an official letter from the Office of Admissions within six weeks of your audition date. If you do not receive an official letter from Admissions within 6 weeks of your audition date, please contact the Music Program at 718-488-1051.

Upon entering the Music Program as an incoming student, a placement exam is required prior to registration (unless you have college credit in English and Math). For more information regarding testing and exemptions, please visit the Testing Center.
