The Working Actor

At the conclusion of this program, the student will have gained: a working knowledge of what it takes to become a professional actor; basic understanding of theatre, film and television acting techniques; improvisational skills; enhanced public speaking capabilities; the ability to audition for a professional casting director; and increased self-awareness and confidence.

Over four classes students will cover:

The Life of a Professional Actor: In this class, students will be given an in depth review of the business side of the acting profession. In addition, students will learn and practice performance based exercises and techniques.

Scene Study and Improvisation: In this class, students will learn how to “break down” a scene and character, basic improvisation techniques, watch film and live theater.

Audition Techniques and Cold Reads: In this class, students will learn how to prepare for an audition, command a room with a cold read, and be taught tactics to secure the part.

Public Speaking for the Actor: In this class, students will learn how to accentuate their skills set to a crowd and learn the basics of effectively communicating to individuals or a large crowd.

Instructor bio:

Instructor Malik YobaMalik Yoba, three time NAACP Image Award winner, creator, writer, director and producer of BET.com’s “Shoptalk: What’s on the Hearts of Men” is a film, stage and television veteran of almost 20 years. Best known for his roles in Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married” and “Why Did I Get Married Too,” Paramount’s “Girlfriends,” Fox Television’s “New York Undercover” and the Disney classic “Cool Runnings,” Yoba has appeared in more than 25 films and has starred in 10 television series and numerous stage plays. He is also the founder of the Malik Yoba National Theatre Company. Watch Malik Yoba in the new SyFy series “ALPHAS” on Mondays at 10pm on SyFy channel.
