Personal Training Minor
The 12-credit Personal Training minor is designed for students who want to pursue a dynamic
career in the rapidly growing fitness & wellness industry. Students will learn how to assess
clients in various fitness components including strength, cardiorespiratory fitness, flexibility
and balance. Students will learn how to create goal-specific fitness programs using the
Optimum Performance Training (OPT) model, as well as provide nutritional advice and help
develop weight management strategies.
The completion of the minor prepares students to sit for the Certified Personal Trainer (CPT
exam offered by the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). The NASM-CPT has quickly
become the most recognized and respected personal trainer certification in the fitness and
wellness field. Long Island University’s Division of Athletic Training, Health & Exercise Science
(ATHES) has partnered with the NASM to help students begin their fitness career as a health
and fitness professional.
