Top-10 Reasons to Pick LIU Brooklyn
Picking the right school can be daunting. But as one of the schools making the list of 2011-2012 Military Friendly Schools, we can make your choice a little easier. LIU Brooklyn is unique in its mission, location and culture: helping first-generation students realize their dream of a college education, at an oasis in the heart of a vibrant metropolis, and serving its community. Here are the top 10 reasons why picking LIU Brooklyn is right for you.
1. Discounted Tuition for Military and Dependents
LIU sponsors an unlimited number of participants in our undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs. LIU provides its students with more than $37.5 million annually in student aid that continues as you move through your academic career. Once students complete both the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) application, they may be eligible for any of the following, in addition to Post-9/11 GI benefits:
Adult Completion Award ($1,500): First-time entering and re-entering students who have registered for at least 12 credits in the Adult Completion Program
Rising Freshman Award ($1,000): First-time entering freshmen who have completed at least 12 credits with a 2.0 G.P.A.
Scholars Award ($2,000 annually): Students who have earned at least 30 credits from LIU, achieving a 3.0 cumulative G.P.A.
Upperclassman Recognition Award ($2,000 annually): Continuing students who earn at least 60 credits at LIU and achieve at least a 3.0 G.P.A.

Also included are Federal Work Study funds for campuses, which we offer in awards of up to $5,000 to eligible students. Students who earn Federal Work Study dollars may request that their earnings be applied directly to their accounts in the Office of Integrated Student Financial Services to help with deferred payment plans.

Graduate Assistantships/Fellowships: More than 500 awarded annually

Graduate Excellence Award: For full-time (12 credit) enrollment in graduate phase of a B.S./M.S. or Pharm D. with 3.5 G.P.A., $2,000 annually.
2. Generous Transfer Credit Policies
LIU Brooklyn offers up to 24 transferrable credits to service members for military training and experience. Additional credit transfers will be considered contingent upon advanced military experience. Degree offerings include Management, Health Science and Journalism, just to name a few. Our Online Portfolio for Adult Learners (Project OPAL) provides the conduit through which transfer credits for military service are considered. Also, we offer a special veterans section of our COOP I course that specializes in preparing veterans for internships and the civilian workforce. In addition to assisting with resume writing, the class covers Veterans Preference and other veterans' benefits. A grant for full-time veterans covers the cost of the course.
3. Yellow Ribbon Schools
LIU is proud to continue its participation in the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program. This University-funded scholarship program, a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008, is designed to help students and families with the cost of higher education by providing a match for their post-9/11 GI bill tuition benefits. The University provides scholarship funds towards tuition and fees, which are matched by the Department of Veterans' Affairs (VA) for each eligible student.
4. In-State Tuition Waivers
LIU understands that relocating comes with the job of serving in the military and offers in-state tuition for military and their dependents.
5. Dedicated Veteran Counselors and Staff
At LIU Brooklyn, our Veterans Task Force will provide one-on-one, specialized attention to help you transition from service member to student.
6. Special Policies for Deployments
For those service members who are called back to duty, a request for military withdrawal, with proper documentation, must be presented so as not to be held financially or academically liable. LIU Brooklyn refunds 100% of tuition and related fees for courses registered in the semester affected by the call-up, in addition to room and board charges. Depending on your academic progress, we provide the option to make up work upon your return from deployment.
LIU is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, a unit of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools that accredits degree-granting colleges and universities in the Middle States region, (Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and several locations internationally). Every ten years, the University undergoes a comprehensive self-assessment and peer review to ensure that it meets the Commission's standards for accreditation. The University is scheduled for its next decennial accreditation review by the Commission on Higher Education in 2012-2013. In addition to the institutional accreditation provided by Middle States, many of LIU's academic programs are accredited by specialized accreditation agencies.
8. Student Veteran Groups
Our student veterans club is in its infancy. We would welcome your joining us to make it more vibrant in Fall 2011. In addition, our veteran student mentors will act as peer counselors to incoming service men and veterans.
9. Flexible Attendance and Scheduling Options
We have academic support services, convenient course schedules, with many programs offering classes in the early mornings, evenings and weekends.
10. Understanding that not all Students are 18 Years Old and Single
By maximizing your prior learning, college and life experience, you can complete your degree in an environment geared toward adult learners at LIU.
