The black cap and gown that you wear for Commencement has a long tradition. Caps, gowns, and hoods were first worn at university functions in Europe during the Middle Ages when monks and students found them necessary for warmth in the cold and drafty castles and centers of learning. Until well into the 19th century, it was customary for many American college students to wear gowns while in daily residence or at meals. This practice has ceased to exist and, except for some British and European schools, few colleges request students to wear gowns except at Commencement exercises.
Caps, Gowns, and Tassels
All graduating students can start ordering their Eco-friendly academic attire online now at, https://oakhalli.com/colleges/LIUBrooklyn. Pharmacy students can order their attire online at ww.oakhalli.com/LIUPHARM. This will ensure that each graduate is properly serviced by having Eco-friendly academic attire set aside specifically for you. The deadline to order your attire online is March 20, 2017.
All late academic attire will be purchased from the LIU Bookstore. Students should note that in order to be guaranteed five tickets for commencement they must purchase their full academic attire through Oak Hall.
Please note also that while we will try to accommodate all of our graduating students, we do not guarantee that will have all of the necessary items to facilitate last-minute orders.

College Rings and Commencement Paraphernalia
For over 100 years, Balfour has been the leader in class ring, college ring and championship ring design. Their representatives will visit the campus on February 27 and 28, 2017 in the lobby of the Metcalfe Building from noon until 5pm to display samples and take orders. Campus Life will host a Graduation Bazaar Wednesday, and Thursday, April 19 and 20, 2017 outside of the Bookstore, which should facilitate all the needs of our graduating population. Students will be able to collect or make last-minute purchases on caps and gowns, yearbooks, and visit with, Enrollment Services, Career Services, Alumni Development, Campus Life, SGA representatives and graduation vendors. You will be asked to fill out a survey. Students must bring picture identification to collect your academic attire. While all graduating students should have already ordered cap and gowns, we will have some academic attire available for last-minute purchases.
Please note, however, that if you did not pre-order we cannot guarantee that we will have the attire suited for you at the bazaar. Note further that if you choose to purchase the wrong attire you will not be refunded in any manner for what you have purchased.

The cap is worn with the long point of the shell to the rear. The tassel is worn forward to the right until the degree has been conferred.
