Caps and Gown Purchase

The black cap and gown that you wear for Commencement has a long tradition. Caps, gowns, and hoods were first worn at university functions in Europe during the Middle Ages when monks and students found them necessary for warmth in the cold and drafty castles and centers of learning. Until well into the 19th century, it was customary for many American college students to wear gowns while in daily residence or at meals. This practice has ceased to exist and, except for some British and European schools, few colleges request students to wear gowns except at Commencement exercises.

Graduation Fair

LIU Promise will host a Graduation Fair Tuesday and Wednesday, April 23 and 24, 2019 from 11am until 7pm at the LIU Bookstore, which should facilitate all the needs of our graduating population. Students will be able to collect or make last-minute purchases on caps and gowns and visit with Enrollment Services, Career Services, Alumni Development, LIU Promise, and graduation vendors. You will be asked to fill out a survey. Students must bring picture identification to collect your academic attire. While all graduating students should have already ordered cap and gowns, we will have some academic attire available for last-minute purchases.

To pick up your cap and gown, you must be in good financial standing with the University and approved for graduation. Please be sure to apply for graduation through your MyLIU portal by February 28, 2019.

Please note, however, that if you did not pre-order we cannot guarantee that we will have the attire suited for you at the bazaar. Note further that if you choose to purchase the wrong attire you will not be refunded in any manner for what you have purchased.
