Freshman Scholarships

2018-2019 Freshman Scholarships & Merit Awards

Long Island University’s scholarship programs are designed to reward students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement in high school. We are committed to providing you with an affordable, high-quality education and awarded over $17 million in scholarships to the Fall 2017 freshmen class. Awards are given to students who demonstrate academic achievement, athletic talent, or strong leadership as well as performers and artists. Aid is also awarded based on financial need.

All first-year students are automatically considered for scholarships. Just be sure to complete your application for admission and send all required documents by the posted deadlines. If you receive an academic scholarship, it may be renewed for up to 8 consecutive terms of undergraduate study if you meet the specific renewal requirements, which includes maintaining full-time enrollment status and a 3.2 cumulative GPA.

Up to full‐tuition scholarships are offered to the highest achieving applicants, which includes entry into our prestigious Honors College.
Distinguished Scholars Award / Academic Scholarship*
Distinguished scholars and academic scholarships are generally offered to the top 10% of our admitted students, which also includes entry into our Honors College.
Honors Scholarship* / Excellence Award

Honors scholarships and excellence awards are generally offered to the top 20% of our admitted students, which also includes entry into our Honors College.
Merit Scholarship

Merit scholarships are typically offered to about 30% of our admitted students.
Recognition Scholarship

Recognition scholarships are typically offered to about 35% of our admitted students

* Awarded to domestic students; excludes the PharmD, Accelerated Nursing BS, Nursing BS, and Occupational Therapy BS/MS programs; awards cover up to tuition, less any funds received from the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), Enhanced Tuition Award (ETA) Program, and Federal Pell Grant Program.

Additional Scholarship Opportunities

Other scholarships may be awarded after your application is evaluated. A limited number of LIU Grants are available for students who do not meet the criteria for the scholarships noted above. Talent scholarships are available for students after auditions or portfolio submissions in the visual and performing arts. Scholarships are also available for athletes, alumni, siblings, veterans, and more.

Need‐based Awards

Long Island University wants to help families make college more affordable. As a result, additional need based monies are available to students and families who file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the University’s published filing dates. The FAFSA is available on October 1 at LIU’s school code is 002751.
