Message from the Campus Minister
Dear LIU Community,
The office of Campus Ministry is open to all. The chaplains are here to help students and staff to further their religious practices and traditions as much as possible in this multi-cultural campus community. The Dessie Marr Chapel on the third floor of the Sloan Building is available for all religious groups to use.
The Campus Ministers often encourage the students and staff to get involved in service projects. Some of the projects are very local and take place in Brooklyn and Queens. Others are directed to the four corners of the world. LIU students have helped little children, incarcerated men and women, the hungry and homeless, and victims of natural disasters. Collaborating on Thanksgiving Food Drives, Christmas Gift Drives, and Greeting Card Drives lead the students to visiting halfway homes, to helping at soup kitchens, and fund raising for charities. All these events and programs take place on a yearly basis.
The 2 most popular events are the annual Rock-A-Thon where the LIU Newman Club invites the entire community to join them in raising funds for a home in Tanzania. In the past seven years this student sponsored activity has made a $50,000 difference for needy children far away. Next are the fund raising charitable dinners to help a school. In the past the money raised has helped build classrooms and buy a school bus. Recently the profit from the dinner went to subsidize a student trip to Arusha to volunteer their time and talents with the less fortunate primary school children. In the future the office of Campus Ministry plans to repeat this opportunity and to purchase another school bus for St. Gemma’s School in Africa.
The events of this office have been widely recognized and the participants have won many awards. The recognition has come from the LIU Student Government Association, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, the Nassau County Legislature, the Town of Hempstead, and the New York State Legislature.
Get in touch with the chaplains by coming to the office located across from Financial Aid on the third floor of the Sloan Building. Learn the schedule of religious activities as they are posted and get involved. Let Campus Ministry be a part of your total journey at LIU Brooklyn.
