The C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, N.Y. has joined forces with the national effort Focus the Nation to raise awareness and encourage discussion of the impact of global warming.
Focus the Nation is coordinating faculty and students at more than 1,000 colleges, universities and K-12 schools in the United States to discuss possible solutions to global warming. The C.W. Post effort is spearheaded by Professor Scott Carlin and P.E.A.C.E. (Protecting Every Aspect Concerning the Environment), a student organization committed to the betterment of the environment.
According to C.W. Post Associate Professor of Geography Scott Carlin, “Focus the Nation is a nonpartisan and educational initiative to increase student awareness about global warming. Recently a well-respected international scientific panel (the IPCC) concluded that scientists are now 90% certain that human activities will cause significant climate changes unless current global practices begin to change.” He added, “Students need to learn about why climate change is happening and what we can do reduce future impacts.”
Student Zephyr Jost explained that student groups can get involved by endorsing the initiative and coming up with their own projects to bring attention to global climate change.
Focus the Nation will culminate in a two-day event, set for January 30-31, 2008. At the C.W. Post Campus, some professors will include global climate change into their lesson plans during those two days, guest speakers will present a special panel discussion and students will participate in a national teleconference.
