Military Friendly Schools Brookville, N.Y. -- Citing its help with tuition costs, college credit for military training and on-campus services for veterans, the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University has been listed as a "Military Friendly School" in G.I. Jobs, a veteran-owned publication that serves former service members.

The 2011 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools which are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students. Long Island University's campuses in Brooklyn and Rockland were also named to the list.

"The Military Friendly Schools list is the gold standard in letting veterans know which schools will offer them the greatest opportunity, flexibility and overall experience," said Derek Blumke, president of Student Veterans of America and a member of the list’s Academic Advisory Board. "It’s especially important now with so many schools competing for military students."

"This list is especially important now because the Post-9/11 GI Bill has given veterans virtually unlimited financial means to go to school," said Rich McCormack, G.I. Jobs publisher. "Veterans need a trusted friend to help them decide where to get educated. The Military Friendly Schools list is that trusted friend."

Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools. The common bond is their shared priority of recruiting students with military experience.

Schools on the Military Friendly Schools list also offer additional benefits to student veterans such as on-campus veterans programs, credit for service, military spouse programs and more.

C.W. Post recently renewed its participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which allows veterans to attend private colleges and universities. Participating institutions and the Department of Veterans Affairs split the cost of tuition beyond the maximum state public university tuition, which is the normal extent of G.I. Bill coverage.

C.W. Post has established an Office of Veteran and Military Affairs to help veterans access their G.I. Bill benefits and receive college credit for education and training they received while in the service. A new student organization, Veterans and Students United, provides a network for former members of the military as well as a framework for interaction between veterans and their non-veteran fellow students. The Campus offers the Semper Fi Endowed Scholarship for veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan, made possible by local business executive and World War II veteran Martin Kramer.

"Our goal is to provide support and guidance for veterans from admission through graduation and beyond," said Adam Grohman, the Coordinator for Veteran and Military Affairs at C.W. Post and a boatswain’s mate in the Coast Guard Reserve.

"Veterans need to know there is a great deal of support for them at C.W. Post," said Stephen Siwulec of Nesconset, N.Y., a radiologic technology major at C.W. Post. Siwulec, a veteran who was wounded in Afghanistan in 2004,is the founder of Veterans and Students United, which brings veterans and their non-veteran fellow students together and organizes programming and guest speakers of interest to former servicemen and women. Siwulec also is the New York State regional director for Student Veterans of America.

"C.W. Post has a diverse student population, including several dozen veterans. It’s a welcoming atmosphere and a place where veterans can grow and thrive," he said.

The Military Friendly Schools list (www.militaryfriendlyschools.com/2011list) was compiled through exhaustive research starting in April, when G.I. Jobs polled more than 7,000 schools nationwide. Methodology, criteria and weighting for the list were developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board consisting of educators from Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University, Colorado State University, Dallas County Community College, Old Dominion University, Cleveland State University, Lincoln Technical Institute and Embry Riddle; as well as Keith Wilson, VA’s director of education services; Michele Spires, American Council on Education’s assistant director of military programs; Janet Swandol, associate director for CLEP and Derek Blumke, president of Student Veterans of America.
