Staci PassafiumeBROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 5, 2010) – Behind four goals apiece from senior midfielder Brianne Jackolski (Shirley, N.Y.) and sophomore attacker Ashley Olen (East Islip, N.Y.), along with three goals and six assists from senior attacker Staci Passafiume (Port Jefferson, N.Y.), the top-ranked Pioneers came out on the winning end of a tough East Coast Conference battle with Dowling College on Wednesday evening, prevailing 18-13 over the Golden Lions.

C.W. Post ends its regular season with a 16-1 record overall and a 7-0 conference record, while Dowling slips to 11-6, 5-2 in ECC play. The win also gives the Pioneers the ECC Championship title as they end the conference play with an unblemished mark.

Olen got the scoring started with an unassisted tally at 28:25, and Passafiume followed by dishing out assists to Jackolski and freshman attacker Abigail Ross (Miller Place, N.Y.) at 27:57 and 26:31 to make the score three-zip. Passafiume added a solo tally of her own at 25:46 and the Pioneer held a 4-0 lead.

However, Dowling’s Cassandra Cronin (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) scored at 20:11 to get Dowling on the board, and Brianna Falese (Centereach, N.Y.) scored again to cut the lead in half at 19:40. Ross and Passafiume each notched goals, sandwiching another Cronin goal with two more Pioneer tallies by Passafiume and Olen to end the half with an 8-3 lead.

However, the second half saw the game tighten up just a bit, as Jackolski and Olen opened the half with a goal each, but Dowling scored two straight, and the Pioneers held just a five-point lead. Jackolski scored again, followed by Dowling goal by Stephanie Cotter (Ridge, N.Y.). Sophomore attacker Nan Mayott (Islip, N.Y.) scored on another Passafiume feed at 22:22, but Cronin scored two straight, followed by another DC goal from Brooke Witkowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), and Doling pulled to within three, 12-9, with 16:08 remaining to play.

Sophomore attacker Ashley Janelli (Glen Head, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the game at 12:34 to give C.W. Post a 13-9 lead, but Cronin responded right away for Dowling, finding the back of the net at 11:07. However, Janelli scored again at 5:59, and despite another DC goal, this time by Kimberly Harrington (xx), C.W. Post scored four straight to push their lead to 18-11 and put the game out of reach for the Golden Lions. Two late goals by Dowling were not enough to make any significant dent in the C.W. Post lead as the Pioneers finished off the victory.

Freshman goalie Dominique Mosca (Merrick, N.Y.) made six stops in between the pipes as she improved to 8-1 for the Pioneers. The visitors outshot DC by a 33-28 count, and each team picked up 20 ground balls. Dowling won 19 draw controls compared to 14 for the Pioneers. C.W. Post was 1-3 on free position shots, and 14-19 in clear attempts.

Janelli and Ross each added two goals apiece, and Ross assisted on one, while Michelle Fucich (Seaford, N.Y.) added one goal and two assists in the effort.

Cronin totaled six scores for Dowling, with Cotter adding two and Sam Messineo (Shirley, N.Y.) also totaled two goals.

The Pioneers will await the NCAA Championship tournament seedings, which will be announced on Sunday night.
