Honors Green Students in the National Parks

Honors Green, our new freshman option for core courses related to the environment, entitles participating students to visit a national park through the National Collegiate Honors Council’s “Partners in the Parks” program. This May 2010, Angela Calise went to Zion National Park in Utah, where she camped in the snow, climbed a mountain and learned to spot peregrine falcons. She is shown listening for “sounds of nature” during one of the National Park Service seminars.
Rachel Mahler, Laura Markowitz, Paula Sucharski and Honors Program Director, Dr. Joan Digby spent a week in Alaska’s Denali National Park. Along with students and faculty from honors programs around the country, they hiked through the tundra and helped the National Park Service count moose, caribou, wolves, Dall sheep and grizzly bears.
Scholarships are available for these adventures. Check out Partners in the Parks on the Southern Utah University website. Contact Dr. Digby at firstname.lastname@example.org about programs in 2011.
