Brookville, N.Y. - In response to the tremendous growth of electronic medical records – and the need to accurately and competently maintain them – the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University will offer an online certificate in Health Information Management (HIM) beginning in September 2012. The program, offered by C.W. Post's School of Health Professions and Nursing, prepares career changers and professionals to serve as managers of electronic medical records in hospitals, doctor's offices, nursing homes, insurance companies and other health-related offices.

The online program adheres to the latest standards and documentation procedures from the federal government, including new coding of medical records and HIPAA guidelines.

Accredited by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), the 30-credit program can be completed full-time in two semesters. It will be open to those individuals who have already completed a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education.

From the privacy of the home or office, students will gain the necessary skills in health data management; health statistics, biomedical research, and quality management; health services organization and delivery; information technology and systems; and organization and management. Upon completion of the program, graduates will be ready to take the national Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) examination.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the demand for health information professionals will increase by 20 percent through 2018.

"Medical centers need competent, highly trained staff to ensure the smooth and accurate flow of critical health information across multiple platforms and agencies," said Dr. MaryAnn Clark, dean of the School of Health Professions and Nursing. "This new curriculum, offered completely online, will produce the kind of skilled staff able to meet and exceed the most rigorous government and professional standards."

The program is the only online and AHIMA-accredited Health Information Management program in the New York metropolitan area. Applications for the Advanced Certificate will be accepted beginning January 2012. For more information contact the School of Health Professions and Nursing at 516-299-2485 or visit their website at
