Brookville, N.Y.—A new fully online advanced certificate program offered by Long Island University explores the development of geography-based smartphone and tablet apps—their creation, their implementation and their introduction to the mass market.
The 12-credit Advanced Certificate in Mobile GIS Applications Development, approved by the New York State Education Department, trains students to create mobile applications for wireless handheld devices using location-based technologies. Student will learn how to build apps that deliver information and services directly to a user’s smartphone or tablet – in real-time – based on their geographic location. Proximity-based apps can help users find the nearest business or service such as a restaurant, ATM or gas station; provide turn-by-turn navigation to any address; locate people or businesses on a map; and dispatch emergency services with exceptional accuracy. Companies also used location-awareness applications for mobile advertising, alerting customers via text or tweets of sales within close proximity of the user.
“Smartphones and tablets have infiltrated every part of our lives, as have the apps that run on them,” said Dr. Patrick Kennelly, associate professor of g eography at LIU Post (formerly the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University) and a co-developer of the online program. “Consequently, there is a real need for talented and creative programmers who can develop new applications that can both entertain us and make our lives simpler.”
Focusing on the intersection of two burgeoning industries—geospatial technology and smartphone/web applications development—the online program will help students develop the necessary mastery of geographic information systems, computer programming and network technology that is needed to become an effective application developer. Geospatial technology, whose software industry currently accounts for over one billion dollars in annual sales, is recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor as a high-growth sector.
The program consists of four courses. Each class is offered online during 10-week term. Students benefit from a distance learning environment that allows students to complete the entire program from their home computer, at work, while traveling or on a mobile device.
Courses begin in June 2012 and applications are currently being accepted. For more information, email firstname.lastname@example.org or visit www.liu.edu/online/gis.
