Maria Michta, 2008 valedictorian of LIU Post, will represent the U.S.A. in the 20-kilometer women's racewalk at the London Olympics on August 11.
Michta qualified by winning the USA Olympic Trials on Sunday, July 1 in Oregon, making her the only U.S. racewalker heading to London.
Though many of the athletic events will take place at the Olympic Stadium, the race walks will be held in St. James' Park in the heart of London, passing Buckingham Palace on a 2-kilometer loop.
Michta graduated from LIU Post in 2008 with a B.S. in Biology but missed her graduation to compete in an Olympic qualifying race for the Beijing Olympics. Michta delivered a short video message to the class of 2008 via a large screen in the Commencement tent.
While a student at LIU Post, Michta was a member of the cross country and track teams and interned at Brookhaven National Lab.
She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Microbiology at Mount Sinai College of Medicine.
The Olympic Games start on July 27 and continue until August 12. For more information, visit www.london2012.com.
