LIU Post will offer two unique four-credit courses in scuba diving in the coming academic year, including one with open-water dives in the Long Island Sound that will qualify students for scuba certification.
Students in Scuba Diving (PE 129) obtain the knowledge and skills necessary to dive safely in the open water by practicing in a pool with a full set of scuba equipment. This two-credit course meets at the Pratt Recreation Center pool on Tuesday and Thursday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and is offered in both the Fall and Spring semesters. It is not necessary to purchase any equipment for the course; all equipment is supplied (course fee applies).
After practicing their scuba skills in a pool in PE 129, students can complete their scuba certification by taking PE136. To become scuba-certified, students must complete four dives in open water within a two-day period. Upon completion of the four dives, students receive international scuba certification, which is issued for life. This course (also worth two credits) includes a weekend field trip to the open waters of the Long Island Sound to perform the dives needed for certification.
The hours for PE 136 are to be arranged with the instructor according to availability and convenience. Students may take PE 129 Scuba Diving and PE 136 Scuba Certification during the same semester.
For students who wish to finish their certification elsewhere, these classes offer universal referral upon completion. This can be used anywhere in the world to complete the four dives with another instructor to receive certification.
