Kerry J KimminsBrookville, N.Y. -- In conjunction with the launch of an online Health Information Management (HIM) curriculum, LIU Post has appointed medical records specialist Kerry J. Kimmins as program director of HIM. The HIM program is part of LIU's School of Health Professions and Nursing and offers a Bachelor of Science degree and a Certificate in Health Information Management.

Starting Fall 2012, courses in the certificate program and the fourth year of the bachelor's program will be offered via distance learning, providing enormous flexibility to working students and professionals.

Kimmins spent 15 years with LIJ-North Shore Syosset Hospital, primarily as its director of health information management. She managed day-to-day operations of the Health Information Management Department, including overseeing personnel, ensuring compliance with state and federal standards, implementing multiple automated applications, preparing the annual departmental budget, and increasing workflow efficiencies.

Kimmins has served as an adjunct professor in the HIM program at LIU Post since 2002. As director, she will oversee curriculum implementation, which meets the standards of the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). She will also supervise faculty, assist students in finding internships, and participate in outreach recruitment efforts.

She holds both a Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management from Ithaca College and a Master of Science in Health Administration from Hofstra University. Kimmins is a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) and has served in several volunteer positions on the Long Island Health Information Management Association (LIHIMA) Executive Council.

Exactly as in the classroom setting, the online offerings of the HIM Program will adhere to the latest standards from the federal government, including the implementation of new coding guidelines and HIPAA's transactions and code sets. The university's accomplished and knowledgeable faculty will be available to online students through live chat sessions and virtual laboratory assignments.

The program is the only online AHIMA-accredited Health Information Management program in the New York metropolitan area. For more information contact the Department of Health Sciences at 516-299-4158 or visit their website at
