20th Annual Long Island Guitar Festival at LIU Post, April 16 – 22, 2012

Brookville, N.Y. – A weeklong celebration of musical performances, workshops and master classes will take place at the 20th Annual Long Island Guitar Festival at LIU Post, from April 16 - 22. The festival will feature internationally renowned musicians including the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Benjamin Verdery, Ana Vidovic, Jorge Caballero, David Leisner, the Appassionata Trio, musicians from "A Midsummer Music Dream" and LIU Post Department of Music Guitar Alumni Concert.
Four world premieres will debut at the 2012 Long Island Guitar Festival, including the "Harrisdale Concerto" for Guitar & Violin/Saw, with guitar orchestra by composer Dr. Alan Hirsh, to celebrate the Festival's 20th anniversary.The concerto is written for Harris Becker and Dale Stuckenbruck. Other premieres include, "The Curve as It Turns" by Kathryn Alexander (performed Benjamin Verdery), "Mariluna" by Carlos Carrillo (performed by David Leisner) and "Fire & Ice" by Richard Iaconna (performed by Harris Becker). In addition, the concert will feature a performance of "Pictures at an Exhibition" by Modest P. Moussorgsky performed by the great guitar virtuoso Jorge Caballero.
The Guitar Festival also includes a workshop on developing guitar programs in the high school, a high school guitar ensemble concert including students from Bishop McGuinness High School in North Carolina and Brentwood High School. Also scheduled is a master class with violinist Dale Stuckenbruck on the music of J.S. Bach and a workshop in electric guitar techniques with James Erickson. The annual Emerging Artist Series will feature Juilliard pre-college guitarist Kevin Sherwin.
The Long Island Guitar Festival, directed by Harris Becker, is an annual international festival presented by the Department of Music, in the School of Visual and Performing Arts, at LIU Post. Festival sponsors include the D'Addario Foundation for the Performing Arts, the Augustine Foundation, Savarez, Sam Ash, Murphy's Music, and LIU's John P. McGrath Fund and dedicated individuals. The festival represents the ongoing commitment of LIU to reach out to the artistic community and continue an established tradition of excellence in guitar performance and pedagogy.
The festival has established partnerships with high schools including Greenwich High School and the United Nations International School, Curtis High School, Brentwood High School, Weaver Academy from North Carolina, the Wild Cat Guitar Ensemble from Virginia as well as local community colleges.
Guitar Festival attendees can purchase an All-Event Pass for $175(for all events not including the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet) or buy tickets for individual events with discounts available for members of guitar societies, students and senior citizens. Concert tickets are $30 per person ($25 for students and seniors). Tickets to see musicians fromA Midsummer Music Dream, Jorge Caballero, David Leisner, Appassionata Trio, Benjamin Verdery, Carlo Domeniconi and Los Angeles Guitar Quartet cost $42 & $38 (Tilles Center only). The High School Ensemble Concerts tickets are $15 ($10 for students and seniors). Tickets to participate in the Emerging Artist Electric Guitar Techniques workshop cost $15. The LIU Post Department of Music Guitar Alumni concert $20 ($15 for students and seniors). Tickets are $10 each for other master classes (as auditor).
