Brookville, N.Y. – Jazz Day, a celebration of jazz music, featuring workshops, clinics and jam sessions, will be held on Saturday, March 24 at LIU Post. The inaugural festival will feature internationally renowned musicians performing for and instructing local college and high school students, who will also play. Hosted by the LIU Post Department of Music of the School of Visual and Performing Arts, in collaboration with Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, the event will culminate with a public concert at Tilles Center starring Grammy Award winner and music icon Herbie Hancock and his band.
Conceived by T.K. Blue, the director of jazz studies and ensembles at LIU Post and an accomplished jazz saxophonist, and Dr. Elliott Sroka, executive director of LIU Tilles Center, Jazz Day will showcase some of Long Island's most talented young musicians from high school and college ensembles across Nassau and Suffolk counties and New York City. Groups slated to perform include the East Hampton High School Jazz Band, the Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy Jazz Ensemble, the York College Blue Notes, the Suffolk County Community College Jazz Ensemble and the Ward Melville High School Honors Jazz Ensemble.
"I am truly pleased to announce an incredible event happening at LIU Post on Saturday March 24, 2012 -- our first annual Jazz Day, featuring many high school and community college jazz ensembles, internationally acclaimed clinicians and a cumulative concert by Grammy award-winning pianist Herbie Hancock. Through Jazz Day, LIU Post pays tribute to America's cultural gift to world – jazz," said T.K. Blue.
After performing, the student groups will break into workshops led by acclaimed professional guest musicians including pianist Arturo O'Farrill, bassist Rufus Reid, trombonist Steve Turre, drummer Earl Williams and Blue. Following the workshops, there will be a wrap-up presentation with the LIU Long Island Sound Vocal Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Jennifer Miceli, the director of music education at LIU Post, and the LIU Jazz Ensembles. The day will open with a performance by the guest musicians and close with Hancock's performance at Tilles Center.
Saxophonist and band leader T.K. Blue is a musician of the highest caliber. His artistry is found on more than 70 recordings, including performances with some of music's greatest artists including Donny Cherry, Dizzy Gillespie and Randy Weston. He recently performed on the soundtrack for "Queen City," a feature film starring Vivica A. Fox. He will be performing extensively this year, including a tour of Oman in the Middle East.
