LIU Post will participate in the Game Day Challenge, an intercollegiate recycling competition, at the last home game of the Pioneers football team on Saturday, October 27. Members of the LIU Post recycling program will be on hand at Hickox Field to encourage, track, and measure the recycling at the game in an effort to promote waste reduction.

The 2012 Game Day Challenge is being run by a partnership of the College and University Recycling Coalition (CURC), RecycleMania and Keep America Beautiful (KAB) and is supported by the Environment Protection Agency’s WasteWise program. During the challenge, 72 participating colleges and universities throughout the U.S. will implement waste reduction programs during home football games. Schools track and report waste reduction and disposal data that is used to rank the schools. LIU Post is the only participating school on Long Island and only one of three in the entire state of New York.

To participate in the Game Day Challenge, colleges track the quantity of recyclables and trash generated at one home football game that they choose during the fall season. Following that game, schools will report quantities of each material type and be ranked in five different categories, including:

-Per capita waste generation (Lowest per capita wins)
-Diversion Rate (highest rate wins)
-Greenhouse Gas Reduction (Highest reduction rate wins)
-Per Capita Recycling (Highest recycling rate wins)
-Organics Waste Reduction

Environmental Assistants from the LIU Post Recycling Program will encourage fans in attendance to recycle their paper, bottles, and cans. They will also be measuring the weights of all the trash and recycling by using hanging weight scales. This information will then be reported to the Game Day Challenge and final standings will be released in December. The Environmental Protection Agency will also recognize LIU Post for participating in the program by listing LIU Post on the EPA website.

More information about the Challenge can be found at: http://gamedaychallenge.org/participating-schools/.

The final home football game of the season will take place on Saturday, October 27 at 1 p.m. on Hickox Field. Tickets for the game are free for students, faculty and staff with valid LIU ID; tickets are $5 for the general public. LIU Post is located at 720 Northern Boulevard, Brookville, NY.
