Brookville, N.Y. – LIU Post will launch a pilot Green Office program this November, as part of a multi-pronged approach to sustainability that includes expanded social media presence, a special lecture presentation, and renewed commitment to the work of the AASHE (Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education).
Keynoting this concerted effort is a presentation on Wednesday Nov. 7, when noted sustainability proponent Jim Merkel will address a campus audience as part of the Provost Distinguished Lecture Series.
Merkel is the author of “Radical Simplicity” and directs the Global Living Project, which consults with campuses and municipalities on sustainability. His work offers a path to a deeply sustainable way of living respectful of all life.
The launch of the Green Office program is a year in the making. It began with research by students in Earth and Environmental Science in fall 2011. Students interviewed a variety of office personnel on campus and discovered that many offices would welcome a Green Office program, modeled on a similar program at Harvard University.
The program will enable administrative and academic offices to participate in a wide range of campus recycling and conservation initiatives. In spring 2013, the program will expand to cover a much wider array of campus offices.
Other sustainability-related actions anticipated at LIU Post this fall include:
- Creation of an expanded green website, at http://liu.edu/post/green, which provides information about the LIU Post Sustainability Committee, including access to the April 2011 Sustainable Post Vision Report.
- Launch of an LIU Post Green Facebook page.
- Recent participation by four LIU Post students in AASHE’s national conference in Los Angeles.
On Wednesday Oct. 24, LIU Post will take part in the tenth annual Campus Sustainability Day, an AASHE-coordinated effort. The university has renewed its membership to AASHE for the second year. Anyone on campus can register and access information from AASHE with their LIU email address.
