Brookville, N.Y. – LIU Post’s ninth annual Band Festival, set for Sunday April 28 at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, will feature a collaboration of select high school and LIU Post ensembles performing the music of guest composer and conductor Martin Ellerby.
“Dr. Ellerby comes to us from England, and will be composer-in-residence at our festival, which runs Apr. 25-28,” said Dr. James W. McRoy, director of wind studies and professor of music at LIU Post. “As composer-in-residence, Dr. Ellerby will be presenting workshops with music theory and composition classes, rehearsing and performing his music with university bands, and participating in workshops and clinics at two local high schools – the Hauppauge High School Honors Wind Ensemble, and the William Floyd High School Wind Symphony.”
“It all culminates on Sunday, when we’ll be performing five of his works with four different ensembles.”
Both high school bands will perform at Sunday’s concert, along with the LIU Post Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and the Tilles Festival Band (more than 200 members of the university and high school ensembles.)
Among Ellerby’s works on the program are “Paris Sketches” and “Elgar Variations” (LIU Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony), “Festivo from Venetian Spells” (2013 Tilles Festival Band), “Tales from Andersen” (Hauppauge High School) and “Evocations” (William Floyd High School). Additionally, works by Levy, Hazo, Mackey, Elliott and Lauridsen will be performed.
