Since September 2010, LIU has distributed nearly 20,000 free or discounted Apple iPads to students, faculty and staff, far more than any other institution in higher education.

Hercampus.com has identified the LIU iPad Initiative as one of the Top 10 perks for college students. The website recently recognized LIU Post's participation in the program, putting the campus on its list of "10 Colleges with the Best Perks." LIU Post in Brookville, New York is one of six campuses of Long Island University, one of the largest and most comprehensive private universities in the nation. In addition to LIU Post, all LIU campuses currently offer the same perk. For the 2013-2014 academic year, incoming LIU freshmen and transfers at all LIU campuses will be issued the iPad Minis – the more mobile, easier-to-handle version of the original iPad. The iPad mini runs every app the original does, and it comes with Siri, too. New graduate students and part-time undergraduates can purchase the iPad Mini for $250. Details can be found at https://webapps.liu.edu/ipadeligibility/StudentLogin.aspx.

Schools.com also has recognized LIU's iPad Initiative, highlighting the program in an article about colleges and universities that provide laptops or tablets to their students. The story notes that such programs help ensure that financial need does not diminish the educational experience for students.

“Cloud computing, accessed through tablets, provides ubiquitous access to information,” said George Baroudi, LIU vice president for information technology. “Students can use their iPads to download digital textbooks, access course materials, conduct research, build presentations and group projects, take class notes and exams, and communicate with their professors and peers. Technology is transforming higher education, and LIU is at the forefront of that transformation.”

The LIU iPad Initiative first was recognized as the largest deployment in American higher education on a blog on Forbes.com.
