Brookville, N.Y. - A news release from LIU Post about an effort by campus environmental advocates to raise awareness of energy efficiency through the use of ‘blender bikes’ was ranked #7 on the News of the Week list distributed by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).
The news item, titled “They’re Pedaling Their Way to a Sustainable Campus – With Smoothies,” appeared in AASHE’s April 23, 2013 bulletin.
The AASHE Bulletin is a weekly service of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. AASHE offers four e-newsletters, including the Bulletin, which delivers the latest campus sustainability news, resources, opportunities, and events to roughly 11,000 subscribers weekly.
AASHE’s mission is to empower higher education to lead the sustainability transformation. The organization provides resources, professional development, and a network of support to enable institutions of higher education to model and advance sustainability in everything they do, from governance and operations to education and research.
The news release details how students and administrators at LIU Post converted a bicycle into a smoothies and milkshake machine that runs on human power. The operator pedals the bicycle to stir the blender which is affixed to the back of the bike's wheel. Not only is the project raising awareness about energy conservation, it’s also a great exercise workout!
