LIU Post to Hold 2nd Annual Jazz Day

Brookville, N.Y. – Jazz Day, a celebration of jazz music, featuring workshops, clinics and jam sessions will be held on Saturday, April 13 at LIU Post. The festival will feature internationally renowned musicians performing for and instructing local college and high school students, who will also perform. Hosted by the LIU Post Department of Music of the School of Visual and Performing Arts in collaboration with Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, the event will culminate with a concert at Tilles Center starring Grammy-award nominated trumpet/recording artist Chris Botti.
Conceived by T.K. Blue, the director of Jazz studies and Jazz ensembles at LIU Post and an accomplished jazz saxophonist, and Dr. Elliott Sroka, executive director of LIU Tilles Center, Jazz Day will showcase some of Long Island's most talented young musicians from high school and college ensembles across Nassau and Suffolk counties and New York City. Schools slated to send students include Harborfields High School, The Portledge School, Ward Melville High School, Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School and the York College Blue Notes.

Through Jazz Day, LIU Post pays tribute to America's cultural gift to world – jazz,” said T.K. Blue.
After a performance by professional musicians, including drum master Charli Persip, trombone master Clifton Anderson, trumpet master Valery Ponomarev, Blue and a number of LIU Post music faculty members and alumni, the students themselves will perform and receive feedback from the guest musicians. The student musicians will also participate in workshops designed for specific instruments including brass, reeds and the rhythm section. The day will close with performances featuring the LIU Post Jazz Ensemble plus special guests from the various high school jazz ensembles, and the Long Island Sound Vocal Jazz under the direction of LIU Post professor Dr. Jennifer Miceli as well as a special performance at Tilles Center by Botti.
Saxophonist and band leader T.K. Blue is a musician of the highest caliber. His artistry is found on over 70 recordings, including performances with some of music’s greatest artists including Donny Cherry, Dizzy Gillespie and Randy Weston. His Latin Bird band was a headliner at the Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival and they performed at the world-famous Dizzy's Club Coca Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center and with NEA Jazz master pianist Randy Weston at the Clifford Brown Jazz Fest in Wilmington, DE. Blue also joined vocal legend and NEA jazz master Jimmy Scott at Harlem, N.Y.'s newest music venue, the Red Rooster. He recorded his 10th CD in January, tentatively titled, “A Warm Embrace.”
