Brookville, N.Y. – LIU Post will present the Distinguished Alumni Award to Winifred B. Mack, regional executive director of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, Eastern Region, at the 55th Commencement exercises  on Friday, May 10, 2013.

Ms. Mack graduated from LIU Post with a B.S. in nursing in 1975 and an M.P.A. in public administration in 1983.

As regional executive director of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, Eastern Region, Ms. Mack is responsible for fostering physician partnerships and developing new opportunities for growth and investment on behalf of a network of health care facilities that includes Franklin, Huntington, Plainview, Southside and Syosset Hospitals. In this capacity, she has established a reputation for overcoming financial challenges, strengthening physician and community relationships as well as building and expanding clinical programs to fortify the system’s position as the healthcare heart of its communities.

Ms. Mack has engaged in the planning and development of many innovative developments that have strengthened the North Shore-LIJ system while serving the public need for quality health care. Among her accomplishments was the fostering of a free-standing diagnostic imaging center and women’s health imaging center in Islip, N.Y., in December 2010. She also works with a number of non-profit organizations, such as the Family Service League, and is an associate trustee of Dowling College, a board member of Long Island Home and a board member of the YMCA of Long Island.

Ms. Mack came to Southside Hospital in 2005, serving first as vice president of patient care services and deputy executive director before becoming head of the hospital in August 2006. During her tenure as executive director at Southside Hospital, she oversaw many accomplishments, including the first open-heart surgical program on Suffolk County’s South Shore. Under her guidance, the opening of a state-of-the-art hybrid operating room allowed the hospital to more effectively manage cases which require a combination of procedures from multiple specialists to be completed in a single operating room.

Previously, she served as chief nurse executive and associate executive director of patient care services at Franklin and Syosset Hospitals. Before joining North Shore-LIJ, she held a number of high-level administrative and nursing positions at Continuum Health Partners’ Beth Israel-St. Luke’s Roosevelt Health System in Manhattan, Winthrop University Hospital, Nassau University Medical Center and Stony Brook University Hospital.

With more than 35 years of health care experience, Ms. Mack has distinguished herself as a founding member of the New York Transplant Society and the North America Transplant Coordinators, where she served as president and was instrumental in facilitating Long Island’s transplantation services. She testified before Congress in support of the National Organ Transplant Act, which was sponsored by then-Congressman Al Gore. The diversity of her community involvement was recognized in 2011, when she was presented with a New York State Senate Resolution marking her designation as 2011 Ambassador of the Arts.

Ms. Mack holds a B.S. in nursing and an M.P.A. in public administration from LIU Post and an A.A. from Nassau Community College. She resides in Bayville, N.Y., where she and her husband, Bill, share a home with Bailey, a golden retriever, and one very rambunctious cat. The couple has a son, Patrick.

More than 9,000 graduates, families, guests and university officials will attend the ceremony which is held under a white tent on the Great Lawn beginning at 11:30 a.m. The Class of 2013 includes 2,227 students who will be awarded bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees and advanced certificates from Long Island University’s three Long Island campuses: LIU Post in Brookville, LIU Brentwood in Brentwood, N.Y. and LIU Riverhead, N.Y.
