Eric Tveter, Dr. Cline and Dr. SteinbergBrookville, N.Y. – Guests from around the globe traveled to New York City to honor media and telecommunications executive and LIU Post alumnus Eric Tveter at the LIU Post Scholarship Dinner on Sept. 23.

The event raised $250,000 to help make a private university education at LIU Post more affordable.

Tveter, who graduated from LIU Post in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in economics and accounting, is CEO of upc cablecom, a Liberty Global plc company based in Zurich, Switzerland, the largest Swiss cable television and Internet provider.

Proceeds from the dinner directly benefit the Marit Hafsal Tveter Endowed Scholarship, a scholarship in memory of Tveter’s mother.

“LIU is a school where many graduates, like me, are the first in their families to attend university,” Tveter said in remarks to guests at the dinner. “LIU has exceptional diversity and from that diversity comes strength. The ways in which universities deliver higher education will continue to change – online learning for example – but the need to provide a high standard of affordable access to a diverse range of students will not.”

Remarks were also given by Long Island University President Kimberly R. Cline, President Emeritus David J. Steinberg and LIU Board Chairman Edward Travaglianti.

Guests at the Scholarship Dinner included The Rt Hon. the Lord Boateng, member of the British Parliament and former U.K. cabinet minister; William Roedy, former president of MTV Networks International, and Richard Ancona, chief technology officer at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The importance of scholarships was emphasized by LIU Post student Dan Potenzieri, a Marine Corps veteran from a small town in Oregon and president of the LIU Post Student Government Association.

“These scholarships played a vital role in my return to college for my senior year,” Potenzieri said. “I hope that my career will allow me to do what all of you have done tonight, donate to a scholarship fund that has the potential to change lives. This is something far more powerful than you may imagine. These scholarships allow dedicated, hard-working students to earn the degrees that will allow them to pursue change in the world.”

LIU Post administers federal, state and institutional aid programs to qualified students to help them finance their college education. Funds are available through a variety of sources, including the United States Department of Education, the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation, and the LIU Post campus. Eighty-five percent of undergraduates and 62 percent of graduate students at LIU Post receive financial aid.

LIU Post is a campus of Long Island University, one of the largest and most comprehensive private universities in the United States. With more than 7,100 full- and part-time students, LIU  Post offers a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs in accountancy, business (AACSB accredited), computer science, liberal arts and sciences, library and information science, education, health professions and nursing, public service, and visual and performing arts. LIU Post also offers doctorates in information studies, clinical psychology and interdisciplinary educational studies, as well as an extensive continuing education program.
