Celebrate Earth Day at LIU Post
Annual Sustainability Celebration and lecture being held on sustainability
Sarah DeCamp,Associate Director of Public Relations
LIU Post is celebrating Earth Day (April 22) with two events on campus. On April 22, the university will host its fourth annual Sustainability Celebration, and on April 23, Peter Maniscalco, an independent educator who teaches shamanic drumming mediation to medical and nursing students, as well as nurse practitioners, will hold a talk, entitled “Authentic Sustainability Integrating Science and Shamanism.”
The Annual Sustainability Celebration, open to the LIU community, will be held in the Great Hall at the Winnick House at LIU Post from 6:30 to 9 p.m. It will feature keynote speaker Jennifer Juengst, a local environmental lawyer, who will address the theme of this year’s dinner, “Be the change, make a difference!”
In addition, 10 students will be inducted into the National Honor Society for Sustainability, whose mission is to foster a network of sustainability scholars who have demonstrated academic excellence and are committed to solving global challenges and sustainability. Students, faculty, and staff who have contributed to the greening of LIU Post will also be honored at the celebration, and the winner of the Creative Expressions scholarship competition will be announced.
Attendees will also learn about advancements in sustainability on campus in the last year, including the 2012-2013 report Sustainability at LIU Post: A Year in Review, and the informative, new sustainability blog, The LIU Commpost, both developed by William Achnitz, sustainability coordinator and student at LIU Post. Achnitz also helped double the recycling rate in the year’s Recyclemania—a national competition—and landed LIU Post on Sierra Club’s Cool Schools list.
In addition to these impressive accomplishments, fellow student Juan Carlos Gutiérrez, will present some preliminary results from his campus transportation survey at this year’s dinner. Both Achnitz and Gutiérrez recently accompanied Scott Carlin, professor at LIU Post, to this year’s Sustainable Long Island conference, where they hosted an LIU Post table filled with information illustrating this year’s accomplishments.
Maniscalco will present: “Authentic Sustainability: Integrating Science and Shamanism” on April 23, during common hour from 12:30 to 1:50 p.m. at the Interfaith Center at LIU Post. The presentation will focus on the critical issue of humanity’s separation from nature. This issue will be explored from both the scientific perspective of sustainability, as well as shamanism. To help introduce the concept of shamanism, Mr. Maniscalco will lead a short drumming meditation.
