Film Students Visit Set of TV Series The Following

Communications & Marketing, LIU,

filmLIU Post film students attended the taping of the Season II finale of Fox 5’s The Following at a private home in Old Westbury, N.Y., on March 25.

The students were able to observe Kevin Bacon and Shawn Ashmore perform in their roles as Ryan Hardy and Mike Weston, respectively. In between scenes, the students chatted with Jessica Stroup (formerly of 90210), who plays Max Hardy, the niece of Ryan Hardy.

LIU Post served as the base camp for the film crew’s equipment, relaxation trailers, and dining facilities. “The university was pleased to provide space on our scenic campus for the actors and crew to enjoy some down time,” said Rita Langdon, executive director of campus operations and strategic partnerships at LIU Post. “The actors were friendly to our students and eager to accommodate requests for conversation and autographs.”

The LIU Post film majors on the set included Eddie Richter, a sophomore from Stockholm, Sweden, and Justin Espinal, a freshman from Commack, N.Y. The students’ Success Coaches from the LIU Promise program—who mentor undergraduates on their major and career path—arranged for them to participate in this experiential learning opportunity.

“Being a film student at LIU Post, and being on set at a TV series like this, really helped me grasp how it feels to be on a constantly moving set,” said Espinal. “Having the opportunity to meet people on the set taught me how big of a business the TV industry is, and how much teamwork is involved in creating one scene."

For Richter, the opportunity to watch a hit television series in production was the reason he selected LIU to pursue a B.F.A. in Film with a minor in Business Administration.

“At the set, I interacted with professional actors, location scouts and sound technicians, and learned some techniques for lighting and staging,” said Richter, an aspiring director who co-produced a YouTube music video with fellow classmate Christopher Jakobsen (senior film major, Oslo, Norway) in New York City during spring break.

The season finale of The Following will air on Fox 5 on April 28 at 9 p.m.
