LIU Announces New U.N. Ambassador Speaker Series

UNAmbassador1Long Island University (LIU) announced a new lecture series on topics of global importance that will feature speakers from the United Nations. The first in the series will be a talk by former U.N. Ambassador from Pakistan Ahmad Kamal entitled, “Major Challenges Faced by the United Nations in the 21st Century.” The lecture will be held at LIU Post, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., in Humanities Hall Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the university community.

Kamal is presently senior fellow at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research and is best known for his work as a professional diplomat in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan though he has served at postings around the world for nearly 40 years. As ambassador and permanent representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, he held high elective posts, including vice president of the General Assembly. He was also the chief negotiator in talks that led to the formation of the World Trade Organization. A graduate of the Paris Institute of Political Studies and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, Kamal was a Carnegie Foundation Fellow at the London School of Economics and is the author of works on disarmament, management, multilateralism, global economic issues, and information technology.

LIU's U.N. Ambassador Speaker Series will feature lectures on diverse topics, including political, economic, social, and environmental issues. The series will be held at the LIU Post and LIU Brooklyn campuses. Speakers will be announced as they are confirmed. Dates for the 2014 series include: 

  • Monday, Feb. 10, LIU Post, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, March 20, LIU Brooklyn, 11 a.m. to noon
  • Thursday, April 17, LIU Brooklyn, 11 a.m. to noon
  • Monday, April 28, LIU Post, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Series coordinator and LIU Post Assistant Dean of the College of Education, Information, and Technology Oscar De Rojas says: “This series offers LIU students an incredible opportunity to learn about the multinational world they will enter as graduates. It builds upon the powerful resources that are uniquely available in the New York City area and extends our relationships even deeper into the global community. We are excited and honored to have speakers as renowned and influential as Mr. Kamal joining us for this important series.”
