Growing a Business Using Personal Branding
Social media guru Hilary Topper’s PR business story at Outside the Box Lecture on March 25

Hilary J.M. Topper, who founded HJMT Public Relations, Inc., a full-service public relations firm in 1992, is scheduled to speak at the Outside the Box lecture series on Tuesday, March 25, during common hour, from 12:30 to 2 p.m., in the lower level of the B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library, room 130.
Topper, an entrepreneur and early adopter of social media tactics, started her firm 21 years ago out of her one bedroom apartment in Long Beach, N.Y. Today, she has offices in Melville, New York City, and Rochester, N.Y. In her lecture, Building Personal Brand to Enhance Business Development for Your Business, Topper will explain how she was able to grow a successful business through the use of personal branding tactics, such as her blogs, book, and radio show, and through social media.
Prior to starting her own firm, Topper worked at top PR agencies, including Ogilvy & Mather, Hill Holiday, and Ruder Finn. Her blog, hillarytopper.com, which receives more than 35,000 unique visitors a month, was named “Blog of the Year” by the Fair Media Council and was also a two-time Stevie Awards “Woman’s Blog of the Year” finalist. She is also the author of Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Social Media, but Were Afraid to Ask… Building Your Business Using Consumer Generated Media and host of an online radio show called “Hilary Topper On Air.”
“Topper is a great entrepreneur and personal branding expert,” said Andrew Rosman, dean of the College of Management at LIU Post. “Her early adoption of social media for business use helped her firm grow substantially and our students can learn a lot from her about how to grow a successful business from the ground up.”
The Outside the Box informal lectures are free and open to the LIU community. Future speakers include Irwin Tantleff, founder of Foodtown; Eric Ho of Capital One Labs; and Jeff Leventhal of Workmarket.
