Sarah DeCamp,Associate Director of Public Relations
LIU Post will hold its third annual Jazz Day this Saturday, March 8, 2014, at 8 p.m. Jazz Day will feature faculty and student performances, adjudication, jam sessions, and an evening concert with the Duke Ellington Orchestra plus vocalist Patti Austin. Internationally renowned musicians and high school students will perform at the event.
Hosted by the LIU Post Department of Music of the School of Visual and Performing Arts in collaboration with the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, the event will culminate with a concert at the Tilles Center starring Grammy-award-winner Patti Austin and the Duke Ellington Orchestra conducted by Tommy James, performing the music of Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington.
Jazz Day was created by T.K. Blue, the director of Jazz Studies at LIU Post and an accomplished jazz saxophonist, in collaboration with Dr. Elliott Sroka, executive director of the Tilles Center. Included in the day’s events are performances by some of the most talented young local musicians from high schools across Nassau and Suffolk counties and New Jersey.
The students will perform and receive feedback from the LIU Post jazz faculty. The day will conclude with performances by the LIU Post Jazz Ensemble, the Long Island Sound Vocal Jazz, and the LIU Post Jazz Combo, plus special guests from the various high school jazz ensembles.
“I am excited to announce our third annual Jazz Day at LIU Post,” said T.K. Blue. “The day brings together local high school and college musicians and helps them not only learn from each other, but also learn from the renowned musicians attending the event. Together we celebrate Jazz—America’s cultural gift to the world. During our first Jazz Day event back in 2012, jazz icon and master pianist Herbie Hancock greeted the enthusiastic crowd of young jazz players. He pointed out that the United Nations, along with UNESCO, have designated the month of April as International Jazz Appreciation Month.”
