Back in the 1920s and '30s, when the C.W. Post Campus was the private estate of cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, the Great Lawn hosted the footsteps of such famous people as financial wizard E.F. Hutton, Eleanor Roosevelt, Billie Burke (Glinda the Good Witch from "The Wizard of Oz") and her husband Flo Ziegfeld, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Gloria Vanderbilt, and the Royal Family of Luxembourg. After 1954, when the estate became a college campus, the Great Lawn cushioned the soles of such notables as Carl Sagan, Harry F. Guggenheim, Bobby Kennedy, Harry Chapin, Aaron Copland, Alec Baldwin, Kitty Carlisle Hart, Yo Yo Ma, Nelson DeMille, Charlie Rose, Helen Gurley Brown and Marvin Hamlisch.
Here, Marjorie Post glides over the vast lawn with Long Island University Chancellor and President of C.W. Post, R. Gordon Hoxie, during commencement exercises on May 14, 1967.
