Lauren Kinhan

Adjunct Professor of Jazz Voice

B.M. in Vocal Performance, Berklee College of Music

Description

Vocalist, composer, producer and teacher, Lauren Kinhan is happy to be a part of the LIU Post Jazz Faculty. As a member of the critically acclaimed vocal jazz quartet New York Voices for the past 25 years, and a singer/songwriter with 4 solo recordings to date, she is respected for her individual and innovative approach to music, whether rearranging a standard or writing a song. She has worked with many jazz legends over the years including singing and recording with Bobby McFerrin, Ornette Coleman, Paquito D’Rivera, Count Basie Orchestra, Ivan Lins, Nancy Wilson, and the list goes on. In and around her performance and recording schedule with New York Voices, she tours with her own band, focusing most recently on her latest recording paying homage to Nancy Wilson entitled "A Sleepin’ Bee." The album is a perfect example of how Lauren practices what she preaches in her private lessons, taking ownership of a musical idea and seeing it through with deep and thoughtful musical touches and scripting charts that are personal and creative.

A graduate of Berklee College of Music, she has honed a professional and creative ethic that is always in search of the authentic voice and meaningful point of view. The late, great producer, Phil Ramone (Billy Joel, Phoebe Snow) called Lauren a true songstress. In order to maintain that faithful statement, she keeps one firm leg in the performance end of industry so her teaching remains up to speed and relevant.

New York Voices have firmly established themselves as veteran teachers of the jazz art form. They run two well established and respected vocal jazz camps at Ithaca College and abroad. She is an in demand clinician and conductor. And in her private studio, she designs a program that breathes with her student’s abilities and goals, while also offering a structured method of studying applied jazz voice with healthy vocal production, rhythmic integrity, phrasing, song development, improv, transcription and research.
